Farm News

Two of our grandkids came for a visit Sunday till Friday. So not much time for pics. Did grab the camera when I saw a Prothontarly Warbler in the Chestnut Tree before sunrise. It never came back but I took a few shots of some other birds near the feeders. I took both grandkids for a four wheeler ride around the farm. Harper said lets look for butterfly eggs. The first milkweed plant she looked at had a tiny monarch caterpillar. So we had to rush to the house to take it to Grammy to raise. We plantedĀ  sweet corn, white half runner beans, horticulture beans, and buckwheat for the bees. Harper helping plant the sweetcorn seed, Nolan keeping off any bad guys from coming with his light swords.

In the afternoon Harper said, look a butterfly. Last fall we had seven Black Swallowtail butterfly Chrysallis show up on a potted fennel plant. When we read up about them we new they would overwinter and emerge this spring. So my “Little Woman” placed the plant and chrysallis in a butterfly cage and cared for them over the winter by misting them once a month and keeping them in winter like conditions. One emerged about a month ago. The butterfly Harper had noticed was in the cage. She let it go it took off before I could get a photo. Then we noticed another butterfly had emerged but was still in the pumping up of the wings stage. Harper grabbed the stick it was on and gave it a good lookover. Then when the wings had hardened my wife released it. In one photo you can see the butterfly and another chrysallis with butterfly yet to emerge. Well that is about it for the farm news. Posting may be spotty this week if at all. Will be enjoying the company of our grandchildren…
