Experimenting In Black And White

Experimented with black and white photography through the middle of the morning. Did not like any of the pics except one of a flicker. Still it was a good learning exercise. One I doubt I will repeat. For me shooting black and white is taking technology backwards. Sure I have seen plenty of black and white stuff I like. It just does not work for me to do at the present time. If your heart ain’t in it your are bound to fail.

At the end of my shooting for the day switched back to color. Caught the male eagle bringing in a fish to the nest at the swap out. The fish head was missing. I assume the male had eaten the head. The part they usually eat first. The female devoured the fish as fast as I ever saw. Then she flew off and the male settled down on the eggs. Still it was a good day to be out…

  1. I’m not crazy about shooting in black and white either. I might find one out of 50 that I like.
I do like that flicker shot though, and the flashback is excellent. Actually it might not be bad in black and white.

The only black and white I’ve liked is of people or places with ‘historical’ in mind. We had a celebration of our Church’s beginnings, 1813, recently and it was fun to dress for that period and then change pix to black and white. But I actually like the Flicker pic. I agree that somehow they lose the beauty that God created and that makes ‘birding’ fascinating. Yep, I’d stick with color in all it’s fullness. The flashback dawn would be pretty I suppose in b&w but then it’d just look foggy. When that sunrises with all it’s glorious color, you get that beautiful pic. BTW the Eagle vs fish head text is very interesting, as well as the great pix to testify of it.

      Ellen,
I agree the nature stuff I enjoy is just better in color. Thank You, one reason I take photos is to allow me to better understand what is happening that I can with the naked eye or remembering. With the naked eye I only would have guessed it was a fish.
