Eagles And Butterfly Caterpillars

The most memorable thing about this summer is my wife learning to raise Monarch Butterflies. She has raised and released about 75 so far. We reworked a couple flower beds by the house last spring. She planted butterfly host plants. Milkweed of several varieties. i actually don’t know what all. It has been a delight to have a Monarch on the mexican sunflowers by our back porch almost anytime I look out, along with swallowtails, skippers and the rare painted ladies. I finally grabbed the macro lens and photographed a few stages of the butterfly stages before they change in to butterflies. After the eagle pics their is a monarch caterpillar feeding on milkweed in its last caterpillar stage. They will crawl off to another plant and J-Hang as in the second pic. Quickly transforming in to a chrysalis where they remain for 8-10 days before eclosing into a butterfly. The forth and fifth pics are off a black swallow tail caterpillar in a young stage and a later stage. Have not been able to spot a swallowtail chrysalis yet. It is amazing how fast the caterpillars can devour a plant…

Wow, beautiful photos of the caterpillars in all stages. Another fantastic process in nature for your Grandkids to have seen periodically. (A sister of mine in MI does the same thing and it has been a few years since I’ve seen them.) The Eagles photos put an exclamation point on this 9/11 set of photos. They look their strong selves and almost stern. Perhaps my viewing them and noting different expressions is all in my view point and thoughts each day. (Yesterday’s bright eyes and today’s strong and stern?)
