Cold But No Wind

It was our coldest morning yet temperature wise with low of 2 degrees. However there was no wind. I was able to get out and walk and stand in one spot for an hour or so pretty comfortably. Still not seeing a lot of activity. Several eagles below Kentucky Dam but saw none picking up fish or feeding….

Jim, Is that owl new and different for the area and/or time of the year? It’s a beautiful bird. But I wonder: Was it “caught” while it closed its eyes in the last photo or was it sleeping? Seems somehow more sleeping than just closed eyes. But what do I know about that?
Perhaps when birds (as in the eagles some days ago) perch for a long time they go to sleep? Just wondering. MCS

      Mary S,
It is a barred owl, the most common owl for this area. The owl appeared to be napping in the last photo. I moved on and left it alone. It was pretty open for a barred owl. With the cold probably out hunting later than normal as they are mostly nocturnal…

  2. Great shots of the owl! What a tiny twig it was sitting on.
I hope we all warm up soon. I’m getting winter weary.
